Answer to Question #14443 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Medical and Dental Equipment and Shielding — Equipment

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q

In regard to the warning lights outside of the x-ray rooms (x ray is on). Do these lights need to be tested monthly, similar to what is required for battery-powered exit and egress lighting?

A

I am not aware of any requirement for testing these lights on a regular basis, however, it may be a requirement in certain states or localities. It does make sense to check them periodically even if not required. If you are not required to test them and feel that you should, you can set up your own test protocol, perhaps monthly, quarterly, semiannually, or annually. In addition, you may consider some sort of simple checklist to document that this was done and when.
